How much would you pay for a mobile/ tablet game?

Post by MattS on Sat Oct 12, 2013 2:38 pm

This is an interesting question, and I keep thinking about it as people continue to claim that games like XCOM are 'too expensive' on iPad at $20, when they are fundamentally the same quality as console games and still half the price (sales aside).

So, how much would you be willing to pay for an iOS game that is really good quality and is something that you would potentially buy on console? Is $10 too much, or are you happy with the idea of buying premium-priced games?

For me I have no problem with slapping down $20-$30 for a full, top quality iOS game. The amount of content and the quality of the visuals etc are now comparable to 3DS' and Vitas, so I don't mind paying console prices.

Probably around the $40 range. I've enjoyed several of the titles Square has put on the app store like TWEWY and the Final Fantasy games and had no problem paying the comparatively hefty fees for them.

Of course, those tend to be ports and guaranteed good times. I would naturally be more cautious about a new game, if only because there aren't a ton of $20 games on the platform (let alone $30-$40). But if it was an IP I was huge on or a game that greatly intrigued me before even knowing the price, I'd consider it roughly the same as a 3DS retail download.

I should have mentioned that it also depends on the kind of game when it comes to mobile gaming. For heavy-action games, like shooters and sports games, I'm not as comfortable playing those on mobile as I am on console, so I'm certainly not willing to spend $20 or whatever on a Gameloft FPS, or a Rockstar port of a GTA or Max Payne game.

But for strategy games or RPGs, I find the experience no different fundamentally to a console game, so I've got no problem spending full value on the game. I personally thought $10 for Baldur's Gate or Knights of the Old Republic was an absolute steal, and $20 for XCOM was incredible.

My limit when it comes to downloadables of any kind is $15, and I usually shoot for $10 or below. Only exceptions are full retail games. Then my limit is $30. I doubt I'd ever pay that for an iPad game, though. Not until they release an iPad with buttons, anyways.

That's an interesting question. I think the most I've spent on anything mobile is about $7. Not because I have any sort of hard and fast 'rule' about it, but I just don't use it enough for gaming to justify bigger purchases I guess.

How much did you spend in IAP for Duel of Champions? Razz

I just realised that I spent my "premium" rate for two free-to-play games: Real Racing 3 and Duel of Champions. But I've never spent a cent on any other f2p game.

LOL - as for DoC? I actually just play it on my laptop. Oddly - I never wound up spending any money on it. Their lack of US conversion options kinda annoyed me, which was their loss. I was all set to drop about $20 or so on it, but I couldn't find any clear-cut pricing from my standpoint and there were a few extra hoops to jump through because I was in the US, so I've stuck to completely free (almost have enough seals to buy my 2nd box too. Daily log in, even if I'm not playing, does me wonders).
