Favourite Free-to-play games?

Post by MattS on Sun Oct 06, 2013 2:33 am

This is going here, though feel free to talk about f2p games on iOS and consoles as well. Just because PC still gets the lion's share of them.

F2P games are getting better and better in quality, and it's getting harder and harder to resist spending money on the best of them. In fact, it's getting harder and harder to feel like you're getting a good deal in buying a full priced game when these are available.

On my laptop, for instance, I've got and regularly play League of Legends, The Epic Quest for Mighty Loot, and I've just started on the closed beta for Infinity Wars. On my iPad I regularly play Might and Magic: Duel of Champions.

Those four games alone are enough to suck hours and hours out of me. Obviously they're a bit grindy if you don't want to spend real money, but the grinding is fun, so I don't exactly mind this.

Not too huge on free-to-play games when it comes to long-lasting experiences, particularly on PC. They certainly have a ton of free content and are sufficient for many, but I've yet to find something that holds my interest for any great period. I've had many brief adventures in a range of MMOs such as League of Legends, Eden Eternal, Fantasy Tennis, Dungeon Fighter Online, Ragnarok, and Mabinogi. League was probably the most gratifying during its stint.

On iOS though, I do play the occasional game of Candy Crush or Sonic Dash (though I paid full price for that one before it became free to play). There was also this one FPS game but I can't remember for the life of me what it was called despite that one having the most playtime of the lot. I probably would have continued playing it since it was decent multiplayer, but I believe the company went under.

I don't play many F2P games, as I'm not a fan of the system in general (though some games do it right). TF2 is quite fun though, I played that before it went F2P.

Battlefield Heroes...and I haven't played it in years. I'm not fond of the system at all, to be honest. Very very few games from my experience get it right, and when they do, it's even rarer that they hold my attention...

Battlefield Heroes was lots of fun, but poor matchmaking, perk and level based gameplay and a grand total of six Sydney servers at my time of playing caused me to not bother with it after a few 4 player games.

It's a shame too, that game could have been amazing if it took off.

I also have a somewhat embarrassing history with Puzzle Pirates. Part of me is glad that in all it's archaic sprited-ness, its community keeps it going so I can jump in whenever I have a month or two to spare. Seriously, you can't sail a ship using teamwork and a combination of Bejeweled, Dr. Mario and ChuChu Rocket without thinking that it's the best game ever

Free-to-play huh? On my iPhone Puzzle & Dragons and Tekken Card Tournament get most of my time.

On PC usually Heroes of Might & Magic: Duel of Champions. Just started playing the Infinity Wars Beta and that's pretty cool. Card Hunter is a really fun RPG/strategy title IMO.

On the PS3, best free to play I've had a chance to spend some time with was Tekken Revolution. Dust and Spartacus were both flops in my opinion, but Tekken has trophies and while it limits how much you can play, it was how I got my son into the series, which he is now enjoying quite a bit.

Playing a bit of Dungeon Keeper (it early released in Australia, NZ and Canada), and horrible monetisation model aside, it's really good fun. Similar theme but not quite as brilliant as The Quest For Epic Loot, but it's probably a game I'll keep on my iPad for some time to come.

I think I just played Puzzle & Dragons for about an hour. The whole feels so weird now. This might be the best F2P game I've played. It's only annoyance is the stamina system, and unlike other games, you can recover it quickly just by playing the game.

Puzzle & Dragons is still not available in Australia and has only just been released in the UK. It impresses me that GungHo is only releasing in countries that it can properly support as it comes along.

But I would like to play it Sad

Yeah, Chris got me hooked on it a while back. I probably spend 30 minutes a day or so on it. It's easy to blow through some plays on it. Though, there is a LOT more strategy to it early on than is immediately evident, and I was doing some dumb things early on (like blowing through my gems for continues) that I never fully comprehended. I think the game's a lot of fun though - and it has built up a pretty solid community.
